Business.com review

If you take a look at the wikipedia page about Business.com, you will find out that this site has an extraordinary history. Business.com was sold 2 times, in both cases there where involved incredible amounts of money that kinda made many people to talk about it for many years.

The domain name is the best TLD ever, I think all of you agree with me. “Business” is the main characteristic of any usual .com. Listing your .com on “Business.com” seems like a natural way to follow, so it’s trivial that this domain name will always be a directory.

Now let’s take a look at the site. The category structure is very different from any directory I had analyzed before. I mean, who else has a main category named “Industrial Goods”?

All listings are sorted alphabetically. A site in Business.com cost $300/year. Most of subcategories have good pr, even at the 5 deep level, I see pr 3. This is a good thing although I don’t think all the sites listed pay the annual renewal fee (I see dmoz.org, google.com and msn.com listed). What is really interesting about this directory is also the PPC program. These “sponsored listings” appear in front of the usual listings, almost like adsense. I like the “based on performance” idea that sits behind this.

Business.com has a sister site called Work.com. Instead of placing content right on the main site, the editors write how-to guides on work.com and then integrate content with Business.com. Kinda of twisted, but this enables the owners to have 2 sites instead of one.

Altogether, Business.com looks more professional then Yahoo and Botw and offers at least same service quality.  Too bad that the price is out of my league (so far).

Now, let’s do the grades thing.

PR: 8

Age: 9

Traffic: 7

Category Structure: 7

Listings quality: 8

Number of sites listed: 8

Accepts inner pages: from what I seen, no

Owner: The New York Times Company

Time to get accepted: 1 week

Good points: Has less authority then Yahoo but still has a white ball, good traffic, good company listings, great history and unquestionable business model.

Bad points: Price and number of listings on the same page.

Recommendations: A must for medium and big players.
