Vlib.org review

This old internet directory is listed in Wikipedia’s directory list (also in many other good locations like dmoz Web Directories subcategory, etc) and has the scene name “WWW Virtual Library”.

From “about us section“, we can read that Tim Berners-Lee is involved with it, that an “elected council” (wtf is that) is now running the business, and many other uninteresting details.

Well personally, I think this directory is dead for a long time. Anyone can read very easily in their footer: “Last update: February 2008″. Almost 2 years without any update, just a few listings (and some even not actualized), old clumsy design, no intention what so every of bringing this site in the 21st century – this directory looks like a bad joke.

As a simple example, on the religion page (vlib.org/Religion) we have 3 types of Buddhism, we have Taoism but we lack vatican.va or any other Christian site.

One thing that amused me though, the copyrights page. :-o

So, just to recap, it’s closed for submission, no update what so ever, no design, no clear statement about how runs this thing or how you could try to submit your quality site to it. Interesting, the category urls are SEO friendly though.

Well, I guess “they don’t make’em how they used to”, huh?

Anyway, final considerations:

PR: 10

Age: 10

Traffic: 1 (probably none, as this site wasn’t updated in the last years)

Category Structure: 0

Listings quality: 7

Number of sites listed: 0

Accepts inner pages: yes (sure they do)

Owner: The Iron council

Time to get accepted: well, estimated is maybe 10 years

Good points: Has pr, authority and age

Bad points: Everything else

Recommendations: None.
