Yahoo dir review

Yahoo directory is probably the world’s greatest directory. I have to say I am impressed by the amount of information processed by the editors of Yahoo. Not only the category index is enormous, but there are also quality sites listed. I guess the $299/year fee is enough to keep any webmaster from posting crap or sites that he will eventually leave deserted.

The submission process is simple, the review takes at most 10 working days. Yahoo dir also has a blog of its own called the Spark. I’m not totally getting this, but anyways. A good thing is the suggestion board. Dead link reports together with some technical suggestions mixed in a digg approach, seems a pretty nice section to me, and is probably gold for Yahoo dir staff. I also believe that they have a good checking software that checks for broken links in their index.

Subcategories have great pr. Even at level 4, I see PR 5 (ie. the page where my site is listed – http://dir.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Internet/World_Wide_Web/Web_Site_Development/).This was possible by the direct linking of this subcategory from a main category. Although I don’t really understand why they do this, I am happy that it happened.

The main categories have only authority listings and as I stated above, some subcategories of higher level. Although I don’t get a lot of traffic from this directory (virtually none) and also my yahoo ranking hasn’t improved at all, I am satisfied by the service provided by Yahoo. I have 3 sites listed in their directory, all were very well placed by the editors, between relevant and similar sites.

When I submitted my first site, I calculated how much is this directory making. I estimate there are at least 100 submissions every day. That means almost $1 mil every month, and these are just the new sites. The old ones are most of the time renewing their registration every year. Nice.
